Born in Sofia. He graduated from the Academy of music in 1972 with Piano. From this period are his participations in the international piano competitions “F. Busoni” (1970) and “Alessandro Casagrande” (1971), of which he was finalist.
Velizar Genchev became assistant of Prof. Detlef Kraus at the Folkswang University of the Arts in Essen – Germany.
In 1983, he graduated from the same university with Orchestra conducting under Prof. Reinhard Peters.
He took part in the piano master class of Wilhelm Kempff (1978) and in the conducting course of Franco Ferrara at the Chigiana Academy in Siena (1974).
Velizar Genchev assisted Prof. Peters during the international opera productions in the USA (Philadelphia, Dallas, New Orleans, Milwaukee) and Canada (Toronto in the period 1979-1980).
After 1983, the musician worked consecutively as capellmeister in Bielefeld, first deputy chief conductor in Magdeburg and as conductor of the Youth Orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia and chief art director of the Zwickau Theatre.
As guest-conductor he gave concerts with the West Germany Radio Orchestra, the Hamburger Symphonics, Philharmonia Hungarica, West-North German Philharmonic, with Sofia, Plovdiv, Ruse and Varna Philharmonic, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio, the Classic FM Orchestra and others.
In the 1980s, Velizar Genchev took part in different German festivals. His repertoire comprises a wide style range of symphonic, opera (over 100 titles), operetta, ballet and vocal-instrumental music.
In the West German Radio in Köln were made 40 recordings of him. Under his conducting were released five CDs.
Since 2002 he has been guest-professor at the Tokyo College of Music. In Tokyo he produced the opera “Don Giovanni” by W.A. Mozart and conducted concerts with several orchestras. Since 2003 he has been permanent guest-conductor of the Ljubljana National Opera.
Velizar Genchev is conductor of the Sofia Opera and Ballet and realizes a series of opera spectacles (“Les contes d’Hoffmann”, “Gianni Schicchi”) and concerts. One of his most brilliant appearances was the participation in the project “Der Ring des Nibelungen”, tetralogy by Richard Wagner, the 4 parts of which “Das Rheingold”, “Die Walküre”, “Siegfried” and “Götterdämmerung” he conducted and translated from German to Bulgarian the libretto, playing a key role in the building of the production.
Velizar Genchev was conductor also of the premiere for Bulgaria Wagner’s opera “Tristan und Isolde”.
