Biography

Macedonian baritone Marjan Jovanoski graduated in vocal studies from the class of Ivanka Ninova at the State Academy “Pancho Vladigerov” in Sofia. He holds several scholarships by the foundation “Blagovestie”, Soros and the Macedonian ministry of culture. As a student he actively participated in the concert life at the Academy and elsewhere and earned a number of prizes and awards. Especially notable is his award “Verdi” from the world competition of young singers at Spoleto festival in 2008, as well as the second prize at the “Ghena Dimitrova” international competition in Pleven. He specialized with the world renowned Bulgarian bass Nicola Ghiuselev. Jovanovski made his Macedonian debut at the Macedonian opera and ballet in 2002 in the role of Masetto in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, which was then followed by his engagement in “Madam Butterfly”, “Lidiya of Macedonia” and “La Traviata”. Since 2007 he is a soloist of the State opera in Burgas where he sings a wide repertoire of baritone roles including his debut as Renato in “Un ballo in maschera”. In the period 2008-2010 he toured extensively in the USA where he sang the roles of Marcello in “La Bohѐme”, Amonasro in “Aida”, Tonio in “Pagliacci”, Alfio in “Cavalleria rusticana” and Escamillo in “Carmen” in Baltimore, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles, Daytona, Richmond, Tampa, Atlanta, Mexico etc. From 2009 to 2012 he was a permanent guest soloist of the opera in Maribor where he took part in “Pique dame” alongside the world renowned mezzo soprano Marjana Lipovshek, he sang Scarpia in “Tosca” conducted by Michael Halasz and directed by Diego De Brea, a performance praised in the Itailan magazine “L’Opera”. As Don Carlo Vargas in “La Forza del destino” he sang alongside Renzo Zulian and Valentin Pivovarov, earning new acclaim in the above mentioned magazine. He has taken part in many festivals in Bulgaria such as Varna Summer Festival, “Apolonia” festival in Sozopol, “Mozart festivities” in Pravets, “Emil Tchakarov” in Burgas etc. Especially notable is his appearance at the Ljubljana Summer festival in a production of “Pique dame” opposite the legendary Elena Obraztsova. In Germany on tour in various cities he performed the title role in “Nabucco” and Amonasro in “Aida”. In 2013 he was invited to sing the role of George Germont in “La Traviata” at the opera in Sarajevo.
