Biography
Hans Kudlich studied set and costume design at the Mozarteum Salzburg after a few semesters of German philology and Theatre studies.
He began his career as an assistant at the Burgtheater and in the independent theatre stage in Vienna. During Michael Schottenberg's directorship, he decorated over 70 productions at the Volkstheater and has coordinated the Volkstheater's logistics and technique in the districts since 2005. In 2014, he received the Nestroy Award for his set design for “Wozzeck”.
At the same time, he works passionately for opera and musicals at many different theatres, for example in St Gallen with “Miss Saigon” and “Tanz der Vampire”, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Berlin with “Ghost”, Freiburg and Dresden with Kurt Weill's “One Touch of Venus”, Leipzig, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Kiel with “Sweeney Todd”, at Graz Opera with ”Guys and Dolls”, at Sofia Opera with ”Les Misérables” and at Musiktheater Linz with “The Wiz”, “Ragtime” and “Around the World in 80 Days”, which won the German Musical Award for best set design in 2017.
On the Viennese stage, he works at the Raimundtheater, the Theater an der Wien, the Theater in der Josefstadt and many smaller theatres. Most recently, “La Forza del Destino” with his set designs was shown at the Klosterneuburg Opera in summer 2021.
Hans Kudlich teaches Scenography and set design at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and is returning to the Volksoper after “Der Graf von Luxemburg” with “Lady in the Dark”.
