Biography

Ekaterina Semenchuk is one of the most sought-after mezzo-sopranos of today, praised for her exceptional vocal range and unparalleled technique. Ekaterina was a finalist in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition and has gone on to become one of the most highly regarded singers of her generation with appearances in the world’s major theatres.

Ekaterina's operatic repertoire includes her signature roles as Azucena/Il Trovatore, Eboli/Don Carlo, Amneris/Aida and Lady Macbeth/Macbeth. Besides Verdi, she is known for her interpretations of Princess of Bouillon/Adriana Lecouvreur, Didon/Les Troyens, Santuzza/Cavalleria Rusticana, Marina/Boris Godunov, Laura/La Gioconda, Lyubov/Mazeppa, Marfa/Khovanshchina, Dalila/Samson et Dalila, Giovanna Seymour/Anna Bolena, Preziosilla/La forza del destino, and the title role of Carmen. In the last recent season also Abigaile/Nabucco, Lisa/Pique Dame, Mother/ Il Prigioniero, as well as the title roles of Herodiade and Turandot.

Ekaterina performs at the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real Madrid, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Salzburg Festival, New National Theatre Tokyo, San Francisco Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Baden-Baden Festival,Teatro alla Scala and many others.

Ekaterina is also an avid recitalist, regularly performing around the world with pianists Semion Skigin and Julius Drake at the Wigmore Hall in London, the Mariinsky Concert Hall, Luzern Festival, Das Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, Carnegie Hall, Moscow House of Music, Teatro Colón, among others.

In previous seasons, Ekaterina returned to the Bayerische Staatsoper in La forza del destino and Macbeth, the ABAO Bilbao in Cavalleria Rusticana, at Teatro alla Scala for Macbeth, the Wiener Staatsoper in Anna Bolena, as well as concerts in the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, the Wigmore Hall in London.    

In the 2023/24 season, Ekaterina performs in Il trovatore in San Francisco, Turandot in Barcelona, Nabucco in Las Palmas and Berlin. She returns to the Opéra national de Paris for performances of Adriana Lecouvreur, s well as at Arena di Verona with Turandot and Aida. On the concert stage, she will appear in Verdi’s Requiem at the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Victoria Hall in Genève and at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Gurre-Lieder at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with Riccardo Chailly, Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with the Münchner Philharmoniker and Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevskij at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma with Michele Mariotti.

Highlights for the 2024/25 season are Das Rheingold in Montecarlo, Don Carlo at Bayerische Staatsoper, Il Trovatore and Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci at Wiener Staatsoper, Macbeth in Zurich.
