The Sofia Opera to host grand open-stage performances

The Sofia Opera continues the tradition of hosting big cultural events during the summer season.

During July and August, the square in front of the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral will again transform into a space for grand open-stage performances.

On the 11th, 12th and 13th of July, “The Rila Hermit” musical poem (script by Tihomir Pavlov and score by Father Kiril Popov) will be performed. Production: Plamen Kartaloff. The performances are dedicated to the 1160th anniversary of the Bulgarian people’s christening.

On the 24th of July, a series of ten performances of “Les Misérables” by Alain Boublil and Claud-Michel Schonberg will begin. This production marks the 140th anniversary of Victor Hugo’s death: one of the biggest names in French and world literature. “Les Misérables” is one of the most performed musicals in the world and now it will be set following Plamen Kartaloff’s director’s concept.

The festival at the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral square will close on the 8th of August with a grand performance of Ludwing van Beethoven’s ninth symphony, with the world-famous maestro Daniel Oren conducting and performances by Jessica Pratt, Violeta Radomirska, Gregory Kunde and Alexandar Vinogradov. The performance of Beethoven’s final symphony is dedicated to the 240th anniversary of the creation of „Ode to Joy“ by Friedrich Schiller.

All performances will take place with the participation of the Sofia Opera orchestra and choir (choir conductor: Violeta Dimitrova).

We’re expecting our big audience’s attendance throughout the summer season, too.

Festival tickets will go on sale starting from the 28th of April.
