After its extra summer season on seven stages and with over 17 000 spectators, the Sofia Opera starts the new Anniversary season. The programme is dedicated to the 130th Anniversary of the constitution of the Sofia Opera.
Opera on water, in the embrace of the mountain, among the rocks, in the park – in the difficult COVID times the company of the Sofia Opera conquered new spaces with 66 performances. The Anniversary season starts on 9 October, with “Yana’s Nine Brothers” by Lyubomir Pipkov, defined as the most Bulgarian opera.
“My aim in this 130th season of the Sofia Opera is to pay attention to the Bulgarian talents, to the Bulgarian opera singers. To give chance in our repertoire to rise new stars and to discover new generations of artists”, declared the Director of the opera Acad. Plamen Kartaloff.
The spectators will sit in intervals of one seat, at that on the empty seats will be arranged flowers. We made a serious transformation of the hall and the orchestra will occupy the place of the audience on the ground floor.
“Because these distances, which we categorically have to observe – especially by Richard Strauss, where the orchestra is 85 persons. We cannot pack and gather them. This is why we took the decision, made a spacious orchestra box in the spectator’s hall, we took out the chairs, and the audience will sit on the first, second and third balcony”, explained Acad. Kartaloff.
Two premieres will be released in the end of the year – the opera “Elektra” by Richard Strauss, with a first production for Bulgaria, and the ballet spectacle “One Thousand and One Nights”.
The struggle of many years – in the building, where are situated the offices of the Military History Commission and the Commission for Consumer Protection, to be made a concert hall and Museum of the Bulgarian opera –continues too.
