At a press conference today (2 October), Plamen Kartaloff, Director of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, announced the forthcoming events for season 2020/2021.
The emphasis is 130 years of the constitution of the Sofia Opera.
Traditionally, the season will be opened with a Bulgarian title – “Yana’s Nine Brothers” by Lyubomir Pipkov (9 October). Till the end of the month, will be performed 5 more opera spectacles and 4 ballet ones, and from 3 October starts also the regular programme for the youngest audience of the Sofia Opera – the spectacles for children and the concerts for babies.
This year in November will be held the WAGNER/STRAUSS Festival.
Besides the premiere of “Elektra” by Richard Strauss, in the period 8 – 29 November on the stage of the Opera will be presented “Parsifal” by Richard Wagner (8 November), Wagner-Strauss – Saturday matinee (14 and 21 November), “Das Rheingold” for children (15 and 22 November) and presentation of Plamen Kartaloff’s book “My Wagner with the Sofia Opera. A Chronicle of One Adventure” (16 November, in the main hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences).
The ballet maintains classic titles in its repertoire – a part of them will be presented in October: “Swan Lake”, “Carmina Burana” and “Giselle”.
Still in the first spectacle for the ballet season “Don Quixote” (15 October), will debut John Abenanty – Basilio, Venera Hristova – Mercedes and Carmencita, Maria Yordanova – Queen of Dryads and Red Tutu. In the lead role of Kitri we shall see Kristina Chochanova-Ivanova.
In connection with the measures for prevention against the spreading of the COVID infection, the theatre has reorganized its spectator’s hall. In the place of the ground floor is constructed a new orchestra box with enough space between the musicians. The audience will be settled on first, second and third balcony at intervals of one seat in the company of beautiful flowers.
