The hit ballet spectacle “Zorba the Greek” by Mikis Theodorakis, applauded by the audience on different stages in Bulgaria and around the world already 25 years, on 15 July 2020 came to life on one unusual stage. The stage of the airline Heli Air, on which landed the airplane with the artists, who ran high the energy of the spectacle.
Acad. Plamen Kartaloff’s idea to discover new and new spaces outside of the traditional opera stage for the different titles from the repertoire of our first opera theatre, especially in a situation of the pandemic, gave new life to the known plots.
The Managing Director of airplane Heli Air Mr. Georgi Spasov, Honorary Consul of Sudan in Bulgaria, and the Director of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, Maestro Plamen Kartaloff, united forces for one possible flight on the wings of art. Mr. Spasov shared that in the situation of Covid-19 the artists have a stage, but they cannot perform, the pilots have airplanes, but they cannot fly. So that the moto “We will fly again” gave birth to this unusual event.
Obviously, Mr. Spasov, who is empathetic also for one of the new stages – on Lake Pancharevo, is one of the not so often met benefactors in our time, in love with the magic of opera.
Plamen Kartaloff’s idea the artists not to go out on the stage, but to land with the Heli Air airplane in Sofia imported a special flavour into the known.
I am convinced that the composer Mikis Theodorakis too, if he was with us, would applaud and be moved by the emotion, unleashed by the performers.
Marta Petkova, Nikola Hadjitanev, Rosen Kanev, Emil Yordanov, Marina Marinova and the ballet ensemble of the Opera were applauded long time by the audience. In one moment stage and hall became one at the finale, when the audience rose and cried “Bravo”, and the artists, as if exalted by the mutual magic, danced and danced, unleashed the sparkles of the music.
An extasy, enchanting in an unforgettable spiritual feast.
This was one magical feast in the summer evening, a flight with the favourite ballet “Zorba the Greek” here, at the Sofia Airport.
