At the age of 91 passed away the well-known tenor Georgi Petrov Sapundzhiev. He began his career as soloist of the Sofia Opera. For several years he turned into a star of the most prestigious Bulgarian opera theatre. In the years, he accumulated participations in ca. 1500 spectacles with over 20 lead parts in operas like: “Yana’s Nine Brothers”, “Carmen”, “Nabucco”, “Macbeth”, “Khovanshchina”, “The Queen of Spades” and others. Just in “Don Carlo” by Verdi Sapundziev performed the role of Don Carlo one hundred and twenty-eight times, in “Carmen” by Bizet – over hundred times.
The tenor was guest-performer on many European stages, he took part in a series of tours of the Sofia Opera. Invited to work abroad, the singer replied: “I love Bulgaria more than my life, I cannot leave it!”
