Today the Bulgarian ballet celebrates its 96th birthday!

The beginning was set on 22 February 1928 on the stage of the Sofia National Opera, when for the first time in Bulgaria was staged an independent ballet spectacle – "Coppélia, or the girl with the enamel eyes" by Léo Delibes.

The choreography was by the founder of the Bulgarian ballet school – Anastas Petrov, a long-time ballet master and first dancer at the Opera at that time. At the premiere he himself performed the role of Franz, while Nadya Vinarova danced the double role of Swanhilda and Coppélia. The conductor was Todor Hadjiev, the sets were by Alexander Milenkov and the costumes by Rayna Rakarova-Nikova. The performances were staged at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre.
