This day – 22 February in 1928, was realized the first Bulgarian spectacle “Coppélia” by the French composer Léo Delibes, produced on the stage of the National Theatre.

This is a great holiday for the Bulgarian ballet, as well as for the company of the Sofia Opera.

“Coppélia” was the first standalone ballet and this is why the date of the premiere, 22 February 1928, is considered to be birth date in the chronology of the Bulgarian ballet art and of the company of our National Ballet.

The choreography of this first production was made by Anastas Petrov, who performed the role of Franz. Swanilda was impersonated by Nadya Vinarova and Anna Vorobyova. Georgi Donev was Coppélius.

The sets of the spectacle “Coppélia” in 1928 were made by Aleksandar Milenkov, and the costumes – by Rayna Rakarova-Nikova. Conductor was Todor Hadjiev.

Congratulations!
