Performance director Yuliya Krasteva comments on the challenges of setting the musical
The musical “Matilda” will be set in Bulgaria for the first time. The premiere is on the 27th of March, at the Sofia Opera and Ballet.
“We’ve done everything right in the acting and choreography departments. Together with our two Matilda performers, thirty-eight children from the “Talasamche” children’s formation will also perform. The real challenges lie within the decors and the stage. There is room for improvisation in this musical”, the performance director Yuliya Krasteva commented on the “Bulgaria sutrin” show.
It was a challenge for the children to speak absolutely clearly without mincing their words as well as singing live, portraying their roles, it became clear from Krasteva’s comments.
Matilda is an incredibly smart and gifted child who possesses extraordinary abilities but finds herself in the wrong environment, Krasteva noted for Bulgaria ON AIR.
“It was a challenge for the children to get used to the notion that they are incredibly gifted. With children, you have to be stern but also predispose them. “Matilda” deals with many contemporary problems and is dramatic at the same time”, the performance director added.
After the premiere on the 27th of March, further performances will take place on the 28th, 29th and 30th of March as well as on the 4th, 5th and 6th of April.
