Not by chance this work by Lyubomir Pipkov is called unique in the Bulgarian opera literature. It is born out of the pen of one incredibly talented for his time creator. The opera is a powerful example of national music style. The spectacle’s stage director Plamen Kartaloff points out that the stage character of the work has a key role for understanding of the philosophy and the hidden meaning of its messages. “In them, tells the Maestro, the past meets the future. They are connected by the belonging to the roots of the Bulgarian traditions and the present. In my new production of “Yana’s Nine Brothers” I develop and upgrade with a new look to the stage the effective aspects of the score. But in the tasks of my directing I have kept absolutely the same passion and certitude of expressive and impactful theatrical visualization and the music’s stage influence.”
In the rediscovering of Pipkov’s opera, Kartaloff shares: “I tried to open the pages of the score of this most Bulgarian opera for a new life, with still deeper giving of meaning of the character of its philosophical, psychological and social and public messages. We could freely say that “Yana’s Nine Brothers” is an impactful allegorical masterpiece from the past, directed towards the future. The reflections of the happening events in the musical and stage narration are shaking up also day. The generic power of one Bulgarian family, the Bulgarian soil and the Motherland have an equal symbolic meaning. Their connection is in their common suffering.
My director’s aspects and research experience, I frankly hope to be just one moment in the rediscovering of “Yana’s Nine Brothers” by Lyubomir Pipkov – a parabolic ringing from our national spirit and an image of the individual expressive originality, metaphorically given a new meaning.”
