Singers, known and loved by audiences all over the world, gather on the stage of the Sofia Opera. Their interpretations of works by Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mozart and Verdi have earned unceasing applause and countless awards.
Kurt Rydl, Simon O'Neill and Thomas Gazhelli are welcome guests on the biggest opera stages in Europe and the USA. In their company will be the wonderful Bulgarian singers Gabriela Georgieva and Stefan Vladimirov. Conductor of the spectacle is the German maestro Lothar Zagrosek.
The special version of "Fidelio" will be interpreted by the director Hans-Joachim Frey – an outstanding expert on German opera. His vision of the story of Leonora and Florestan will be accompanied by multimedia set design.
Beethoven's only opera underwent several revisions before it became known in the form we know it today. The libretto was revised twice, and Beethoven made corrections to the musical score over a period of ten years. The famous three "Leonora" overtures are parts of the various revisions of the opera. "Fidelio" was premiered on 23 May 1814 in Vienna. The opera's real fame began a few years later when the role of Leonora was performed by the 19-year-old Wilhelmina Schröder-Deviant, a true marvel of the vocal art.
