After the solemn opening of the new opera season with “Turandot” by Giacomo Puccini, the Sofia opera continued the series of solemn performance and giving young opera singers a chance to shine.
“Carmen”, Bizet’s most produced work filled the hall on the 13th of October and the audience applauded the lead singers vigorously. Zhorzh Dimitrov conducted the performance directed by Plamen Kartaloff.
Two singers made their quite successful debuts. Alexandrina Mihaylova portrayed an honest and pure Michaela with her gracious vocals. This is yet another role the young soprano performs for the first time at the Sofia Opera after Liu in “Turandot” and Musetta in “La Boheme”.
Mezzosoprano and Sofia Opera lead singer Alexandrina Stoyanova-Andreeva portrayed an energetic and willful Mercedes with her spectacular sparkling and vivacious voice. Alexandrina is one of the Sofia Opera’s most prominent lead singers with her wonderful performances during the last season in “Médée” by Cherubini, “Das Rheingold” and “Die Walküre” by Wagner, “Elektra” by Richard Strauss and the musical “The Sound of Music” by Rogers and Hammerstein II.
Also starring: Violeta Radomirska as Carmen, Daniel Damyanov as Don Hose, Veselin Mihaylov as Escamillo, Silvana Pravcheva as Frasquitta, Svetozar Rangelov as Zuniga, Atanas Mladenov as Morales, Krasimir Dinev as Remendado, Anton Andreev as Dancairo, the Sofia Opera orchestra, ballet and choir, with Violeta Dimitrova as choir conductor.
On the 16th of October, Maria Pavlova will debut as Clorinda in “Cinderella” by Rossini.
