ABOUT MAESTRO FILIPPO TONON – STAGE DIRECTOR OF “IL TROVATORE” – PREMIERE 23 FEBRUARY AT THE SOFIA OPERA AND BALLET

Filippo Tonon graduated from IUAV in Venice with a degree in Architecture in 2000, and in the same year he got his diploma in “Canto lirico” under the teaching of the mezzosoprano Paola Patti.

In 2006, he began his collaboration with M° Hugo de Ana, becoming his direction and set assistant. To these two “teachers”, Filippo Tonon owes his education and his professional research.

In 2002, he started working at the Arena of Verona Foundation for the productions of the Summer Festival, at the beginning as assistant director, and from 2016 as Head of the Direction Office.

The beginning of his career as assistant director is of important productions, such as “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” by Mozart, direction of M° Giorgio Strehler, at the Sao Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon; he then personally re-stages that production at the Kursaal theatre of San Sebastian (Spain).

He has worked for some of the most important Italian and international theatres like: Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Regio di Parma, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro della Maestranza di Siviglia, Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile, Teatro Wielki of Varsavia, Sofia National Opera, National Theatre of Maribor.

At the Arena of Verona Foundation he created the sets for: “Il parlatore eterno” by A. Ponchielli, in Lecco; “Una notte nel bosco” by A. Zanon; the Opening Ceremony of the IV National Ecclesiastic Congress C.E.I. that took place at the Arena of Verona; the ballet “Cinderella” by S. Prokofiev, at the Filarmonico Theatre; the ballets “Jago, l’Onesta Poesia di un Inganno” by F. Antonioni and “Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Mendelssohn, this last re-staged several times in other theatres.

His first productions as Director and Set designer are: “Il Mondo della Luna” by B. Galuppi, “L’Elisir d’amore” by Donizetti, “Don Giovanni” and “Bastiano and Bastiana” by W.A. Mozart, “Jephte” and “La Historia di Baltazar” both by Carissimi, “Il Telefono” by G. Menotti, “Il maestro di musica” by G.B. Pergolesi, the musical “Puss in boots” by M. Tutino.

In 2014, he signed the direction of “Carmen” by G. Bizet at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo (Brazil), and in 2016 the direction, set and lights of “Turandot” of G. Puccini for the Maribor National Theatre (Slovenia) and for Teatro Filarmonico di Verona; in 2017, he signed the revival of “Turandot” for Sassari’s Theatre and the direction, set and light of “Il Trovatore” by G. Verdi for the Maribor National Theatre (Slovenia), for Teatro Verdi di Padova (Italy) and Teatro Verdi di Trieste (Italy); in 2018 signed the direction, set, costumes and lights of “Nabucco” by G. Verdi for Maribor National Theatre, Teatro Verdi di Padova and Teatro Sociale di Rovigo. All these productions have achieved resounding success.
