JUBILEE PERFORMANCE - Prof. PETER LUKANOV – ‘DON QUIXOTE’ – 22.10, 19.00

He was born on 22 October 1931. He graduated secondary education in Sofia in 1949.

From 1950 to 1955 he was soloist of the Labor Corps Ensemble. 1955–1963 – ballet-artist and soloist of the ballet of the Opera Theater in Russe, Bulgaria.

In the period 1963–1968 he studied and graduated with honors from the SIDA, Moscow in ballet production in the class of Prof. Leonid Lavrovski.

As a student, he staged six one-act ballets in the city of Russe: Francesca da Rimini by P. Tchaikovsky, The Wonderful Mandarin by B. Bartok, The Kiss of the Fairy by I. Stravinsky, The Prodigal Son by S. Prokofiev, An American in Paris and Cuban Overture by G. Gershwin (in 1965 and 1966), and in 1967 – Light Flows over Everything by B. Ikonomov at the National Opera and Ballet in Sofia.

In the periods from November 1967 (a year before graduation) to 1989, 2000-2002 and 2006-2008 he was a ballet master and director of the National Ballet (National Opera and Ballet Theater – Sofia).

In parallel with his work with the National Ballet, he had been Artistic Director of the Classical Department and Headmaster of the State Choreographic School (now National School of Dance Art).

Since 1980, he has been teaching choreographic composition, classical dance composition and choreographic and ballet production at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. In 1986, the Supreme Attestation Commission to the Council of Ministers granted him the title ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR and in 1994 – PROFESSOR. He was in charge of the Choreography Department (1989 – 1999) and Deputy Rector of the Academy (1993 – 1999). Since 1995 he has been teaching choreographic composition and staging at the Chernorizets Hrabar Varna Free University.

He was many times a member of the jury of international ballet competitions in Varna, Moscow, Osaka, Shanghai, Modica, a Deputy Chair and a Chair of the Varna International Ballet Competition Jury.

Since 1965, he has choreographed, staged and produced 74 ballets, 26 ballet miniatures, the dances in 41 operas, musicals, and operettas, 6 ballet movies among which: Apollo of Mousagette and Agon by I. Stravinsky; Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Ala and Lolly and Classical Symphony by S. Prokofiev; Kaloyan’s Daughter, Fire-Dancer and Micro Quartet by M. Goleminov; Masks and Apocalypses by V. Kazandzhiev; A Ballad for Self-Portraits and The Goat Horn by K. Kiurkchiisky; Creation, Death and Resignation by I. Spasov; Love Magic and Three Corner Hat by M. de Falla; The Apprentice Magician by Paul Ducas; Legend of Love by A. Melikov; Notre Dame de Paris by M. Jarre; Bolero by Ravel; Elegy and Toccata by P. Dzhurov, Giselle by Adam, Don Quixote by Minkus, etc. 

He is a holder of the Bulgarian Orders “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” and “Stara Planina”
