After the exceptionally successful guest-performances in the previous season in Great Britain, Qatar and in our country, with the coming spring the ballet of Sofia Opera is preparing new pleasant experiences for the citizens of several Bulgarian towns.
On 8 April the company will be guest-performer in Smolyan (Rodhopi Drama Theatre), on 10 April – in Blagoevgrad (N. Vaptsarov Drama Theatre) and on 11 April – in Kyustendil (Municipal Drama Theatre). The beginning of the spectacles is 19.00 h.
The tour program includes two ballets of contemporary American choreographs – “In the Middle Somewhat Elevated” with choreography – William Forsythe and “The Concert” with choreography – Jerome Robbins, after the music by Chopin. Both titles had an exceptionally successful premiere at Sofia Opera and Ballet exactly a year ago as a part of the spectacle “The Great American Choreographers – Balanchine, Forsythe and Robbins”.
Kathryn Bennetts, producer of the ballet “In the Middle Somewhat Elevated” said that it is a challenge for the dancers to make something different, like the choreography by William Forsythe. “This choreography gives a new type of sensation to the bodies and I think that the performers are amusing themselves with the challenge”, added Kathryn Bennetts.
“The Concert” is a comedy ballet and the etiquette allows you to laugh from your heart while watching it, shared about it the choreographer Kipling Houston, producer of the work. The ballet has been plaid almost without interruption since the 50’s of the ХХ century, when it was written. It is called “lunatic” and “masterpiece of comic ballet art”. Full with absurd twists, it begins as a classical concert by Chopin, but at the end the dancers transform themselves in butterflies.
In the roles the spectators will see the soloists Marta Petkova, Tsetso Ivanov, Katerina Petrova, Alexandra Drangazhova, Nikola Hadzhitanev, Corrado di Lorenzo, Venera Hristova, Lora Boshnakova, Milena Todorova (“In the Middle Somewhat Elevated”) and
Marta Petkova, Tsetso Ivanov, Vihra Madzharova, Todor Angelov, Nikola Arnaudov, Rosen Kanev, Georgi Banchev, Lyudmila Ilieva, Alexandra Drangazhova, Lora Boshnakova (“The Concert”).
The production of contemporary ballets is not traditional for the classical repertoire of Sofia Opera, but the artists accept the challenge with joy and professional audacity.
Limited number of days until one of the brightest Christian holidays – Easter, the ballet dancers have prepared a real feast for the citizens of Smolyan, Blagoevgrad and Kyustendil.
“The tour is a part of the mission of Sofia Opera and Ballet to make the classical art accessible for the citizens all over Bulgaria”, said the prima ballerina Sara-Nora Krysteva, Deputy Director Ballet Issues.
