Biography

Acclaimed by Le Monde as a “miracle of vocal firmness” and a “soprano voice that shines like the morning sun of Provence” (Der Tagesspiegel), Mariangela Sicilia has achieved immense success with both audiences and critics at numerous prestigious opera houses and international festivals, including Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real de Madrid, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Salzburg Festival, Sydney Opera House, Dutch National Opera, and Opéra de Monte-Carlo, as well as Les Choregies d’Orange, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Royal Opera House in Muscat, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, and Arena di Verona.

She has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Sir Mark Elder, Asher Fisch, Riccardo Frizza, Daniele Gatti, Francesco Lanzillotta, Michele Mariotti, Stefano Montanari, Riccardo Muti, Chung Myung-whun, Daniel Oren, Antonio Pappano, Donato Renzetti, Daniele Rustioni, Alberto Zedda, and directors including Robert Carsen, Rosetta Cucchi, Hugo De Ana, Denis Krief, Gabriele Lavia, Davide Livermore, Terry Gilliam, David McVicar, Damiano Michieletto, Jonathan Miller, Chiara Muti, Stefano Poda and Sir Graham Vick.

In the 23/24 season, Mariangela makes her long-awaited Teatro alla Scala debut as Magda in a new production of La rondine conducted by Riccardo Chailly. She also sings Rachel La Juive at Teatro Regio di Torino, Donna Elvira Don Giovanni at Teatro Massimo di Palermo, and Mimì La bohème at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Macerata Opera Festival. On the concert stage, she performs Verdi’s Requiem with the Human Rights Orchestra and Alessio Allegrini, and Bruckner’s Te Deum at Arena di Verona with Pinchas Steinberg.

Mariangela Sicilia refined her skills under the technical guidance of Maestro Fernando Cordeiro Opa, previously studying with soprano Carmela Remigio and Maestro Leone Magiera. She honed her repertoire at the Mozart Academy of the Aix-en-Provence Festival and the Rossini Academy of Pesaro.
She won third prize at the 2014 Operalia competition in Los Angeles. Mariangela recorded the role of Vivetta in the first commercial world recording on DVD and Blu-Ray of Cilea’s L’arlesiana, released by Dynamic label in 2013. The DVD/Blu-Ray of Benvenuto Cellini featuring Mariangela in the role of Teresa is also available (Naxos).
