The philosophical tale of the world-famous Italian dramaturg Carlo Gozzi is told with much fantasy, lyricism and meaning.

ЗЕЛЕНАТА ПТИЦА

Synopsis

Eighteen years ago, an evil sorceress puts the king and queen of Monterotondo under her spell and orders that their children be killed. However, minister Pantalone disobeys the order and saves the children by leaving them in the river. Smeraldina and Truffaldino find the children and raise them as their own.

Eighteen years later, Truffaldino’s butcher shop is rundown and he and his family are broke. Truffaldino wishes to kick the children out of the house. Teared up, Barbarina and Renzo part with Smeraldina and leave home.

The two of them find themselves on a desolate beach where they meet the wizard Calmon who helps them survive. He casts a spell then a lavish castle appears before Barbarina and Renzo and they become its rulers. They both change and lose their virtues.

Smeraldina and Truffaldino arrive at the castle and stay with Barbarina and Renzo.

Renzo falls in love with the enchanted statue of a princess who can only be freed from the spell with the help of the green bird.

King Tartalla and minister Pantalone arrive at the ball at the castle. Tartalla falls in love with Barbarina and wishes to marry her. However, he asks of Barbarina to find and catch the green bird.

Barbarina sends her brother and Truffaldino to find the green bird. She is sending them to their death because the bird is protected by evil monsters and nobody has ever come back from the snowy mountain alive.

When Renzo and Truffaldino find the green bird and reach for it, they fall under a spell and are frozen in place forever.

After reflecting and toiling for a long time, Barbarina realizes she was wrong. The wizard Calmon helps her catch the green bird and save her brother and Truffaldino.

Renzo dispels the curse of the statue and falls in love with princess Pompea. Smeraldina and Trufaldino fall back in love, just like when they first met. Barbarina and Tartalla proclaim their love for each other. Love triumphs!

The wizard Calmon appears and reveals the secret of the green bird: it is actually an enchanted queen, the mother of Barbarina and Renzo and Calmon is their father. Every character finds love and they all sing the last song of the performance.
