The Sofia Opera presents Verdi's Don Carlo, a star from Italy among the guest singers

On 15 October the Sofia Opera presents Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi. In the opera take part:

Filippo II, King of Spain – Yulian Konstantinov, Don Carlo – Martin Iliev, The Grand Inquisitor – Dimitar Stanchev, doyen of basses at the Sofia Opera, Élisabeth de Valois, Queen of Spain – Tsvetana Bandalovska

On 15 October in Don Carlo guest-performers are the singers: Fiorenza Cedolins (Italy) in the role of Eboli and Jiří Brückler (Czech Republic), Marquis of Posa.

Fiorenza Cedolins has sang the leading roles in operas by Verdi and Puccini in some among the world’s major theaters, including Teatro alla Scala, Wiener Staatsoper, New York Metropolitan, ROH Covent Garden in London, Opéra National de Paris, Opernhaus Zürich, Salzburger Festspiele, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, New National Theatre in Tokyo,  Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Teatro Real de Madrid,  Liceu de Barcelona, Arena di Verona, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Teatro Regio di Parma, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.

She worked with such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Myung-Whun Chung, Riccardo Chailly, Lorin Maazel, Fabio Luisi, Nicola Luisotti, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Oren, Marcello Viotti, Nello Santi, Jesús López Cobos, Gianluigi Gelmetti, and with such stage directors as Robert Carsen, Hugo De Ana, Giancarlo Del Monaco, William Friedkin, Denis Krief, Mario Martone, Damiano Michieletto, Giuliano Montaldo, Pier Luigi Pizzi, David Pountney, Graham Vick and Franco Zeffirelli.

In season 2014/15 she gained a great success performing Madama Butterfly (Cio-cio-san) at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Bilbao, Tosca (title role) at Liceu de Barcellona, at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, in Florence and Palma de Mallorca, Falstaff (Alice) at Nederlandse Opera, Aida (title role) in Macerata and during a Japan tour, Evgenij Onegin (Tatijana) in Palma de Mallorca, as well as I Pagliacci (Nedda) at Teatro alla Scala.

She started the 2015/16 season with Tosca at Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, followed by La bohème (Mimì) at Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Tosca at Opernhaus in Leipzig and Fedora at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.

She has received multiple awards and nominations during her career, including Abbiati Award from Italian Critics, Opera Awards 1999 and 2001, Zenatello Arena di Verona Awards 2000 and 2001, and Campoamor Award from Spanish Critics.

Her extensive discography includes several DVDs, including Don Carlo live from Teatro alla Scala, Falstaff from Salzburg Festival, Luisa Miller from Festival Verdi di Parma, Madama Butterlfy and Tosca from Arena di Verona, Norma from Liceu de Barcelona, Maria Stuarda and La rondine from Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, I Pagliacci from Opernhaus in Zurich and Norma from New National Theatre of Tokyo, as well as the recordings of Il trovatore (live from Teatro Regio di Parma), Le Villi (live from Genova), Tosca for Decca, and Norma for Bongiovanni.

Also active on the educational field, she holds courses in postgraduate training at the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland.

In 2016, Cedolins performed the role of Norma from the opera of the same name with incredible success at the Sofia Opera and Ballet.

Fiorenza Cedolins sang in honour of the anniversary of the legendary bass Nicola Ghuiselev.

Sofia audiences will also enjoy the great artistry of Jiří Brückler, who this winter took part in the opera La Cenerentola in the role Dandini.
