This year marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of two great 19th century composers, Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi.
Today it is irrelevant to all of us whether they were adversaries, whether they liked the music the other created, what their contemporaries thought of them. Today, each admirer has his or her preferences. There are societies in different places around the world that track productions in different theatres. But besides the grand stage titles, both are also excited by short musical forms. There are not many chamber vocal pieces that they created, so the choice to sound them in one programme brings extra emotion.
In a series of chamber events offered by the Sofia Opera and Ballet at the Chamber Hall, Silvana Pravcheva, soprano, Elena Chavdarova-Isa, mezzo-soprano, and the pianist Louise Sibur will perform songs by Wagner and Verdi, but also lovely gems by Bellini and Tchaikovsky on 18 May.
"Wagner is exciting and thoughtful, I would compare his musical phrasing to a blooming flower that enchants by accumulating and creating a larger form. His style is a blend of philosophy, metaphysics and drama. It portrays the spiritual suffering of the modern world. I will be presenting a song cycle based on poems by Mathilde Wesendonck. "Stehe still" and "Schmerzen" capture extremely subtle nuances of feeling. In "Im Treibhaus", everything happens simultaneously and this reflects the complexity of life. "Der Engel" and "Träume" are expressions of drama and combine the three basic arts of dance, tone and poetry.
Verdi writes bravuraly and cheerfully. He recreates the psychological musical passions and states through a brilliant and beautiful melodic line, with long phrases and lyrical power.
His music has its own special tonal atmosphere called "Tinta". It puts purity into any dramatic or emotional situation. He is a more humane artist" – reveals the idea to combine the works of the two in one programme Silvana Pravcheva.
Silvana Pravcheva is a long-standing soloist of the Sofia Opera and Ballet with a vast and varied repertoire.
Special guest is the pianist Louise Sibur, who will perform as an expert accompanist and will also give solo performances.
For this concert is also invited the mezzo-soprano Elena Chavdarova-Isa, who besides at the Plovdiv Opera often performs on various stages in the country and around the world. She will perform songs by Vincenzo Bellini and romances by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
