The Sofia Opera was invited to open the opera season in Salerno on the 11th and 13th of April with the second part of the “Der Ring des Nibelungen” tetralogy. This is also the first of Wagner’s operas to be performed at the theater founded in 1872 with a grand opening of “Rigoletto” by Verdi.
The “Giuseppe Verdi” theater brought together the Italian audience elite at the premiere of “Die Walküre” by Richard Wagner. The Sofia Opera was invited to open the opera season in Salerno on the 11th and 13th of April with the second part of the “Der Ring des Nibelungen” tetralogy. This is also the first of Wagner’s operas to be performed at the theater founded in 1872 with a grand opening of “Rigoletto” by Verdi.
Plamen Kartaloff’s production (he is already well-known to the Salerno audience with his productions of “Aida” and “La Boheme” sparked a huge interest among viewers and tickets for both performances were sold out, days before the performances.
Wagner fans from all around the world applauded the Sofia Opera lead singers, orchestra and ballet. All the flowers and “Bravo!” shouts were well deserved by Mariana Tsvetkova, Tsvetana Bandalovska, Gergana Rusekova, Olafur Sigurdarson, Bjartni Thor Kristinson, Martin Iliev, the eight Valkyries: Stansislava Momekova, Silvia Teneva, Lyubov Metodieva, Ina Petrova, Elena Mehandzhiyska, Tsveta Sarambelieva, Alexandrina Stoyanova-Andreeva and Vesela Yaneva, conductor Evan-Alexis Christ and director Plamen Kartaloff.

The premiere of “Die Walküre” paves the way for cooperation between the Sofia Opera and the “Giuseppe Verdi” theater. With this production, the Sofia Opera captivated the audience’s hearts during its tour in the historical city of Füssen, Germany and in Skopje, Northern Macedonia, the previous year. The new season at the National Croatian opera in Zagreb will again open with a performance of “Die Walküre”.
Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Wagner festival at the Sofia Opera which will begin on the 26th of June with the premiere of “Tannhäuser” and will continue with the four parts of the “Der Ring des Nibelungen” tetralogy: “Das Rheingold” on the 28th of June, “Die Walküre” on the 29th of June, “Siegfried” on the 1st of July and “Götterdämmerung” on the 3rd of July. The festival will close with a second performance of “Tannhäuser” on the 5th of July.
The premiere of “Die Walküre” marks a new chapter of cooperation between the Sofia Opera and the “Giuseppe Verdi” theater.
