On 4 and 5 March the Sofia Opera will present the premiere spectacles of the comic opera "Il barbiere di Siviglia" by Gioachino Rossini, a co-production with the Plovdiv State Opera.
"Il barbiere di Siviglia" is one of the most famous comic operas in the world. An undisputed primacy! Since its birth in 1816, the opera has not left the stages of the world. Of course, because of Rossini's brilliant music! And of course, because of the humour and the arrows of Beaumarchais' plot.
Both time and vice are genetically embedded in the genre of comic opera. Both Rossini and Beaumarchais fanatically follow them, aiming their satirical arrows at the powerful of the day of their time.
At the beginning of 1816, as if as a joke, in about two weeks, Rossini created his absolute masterpiece – "Il barbiere di Siviglia" based on a story by Pierre de Beaumarchais – one of the most read people and the most loved writer in France of his time. Beaumarchais managed to win a place in the history of the greats mainly with his two comedies "Il barbiere di Siviglia" and "Le nozze di Figaro", which provoked two geniuses Rossini and Mozart to "express" themselves and their views.
But time TODAY passionately wants to see itself on stage – both in a farcical, and in a sentimental, and in a heroic reflection. The characters are many and seem to mirror those of two centuries ago. Today we will look around through the eyes of Rossini and Beaumarchais and find our meaning. The one beyond the complacency of some, the triumph or losses of others, vanity and delusions... It is difficult, but possible! We just have to find our Figaro, who, with a razor and a lot of foam, will slip "foolishness and vanity" to its rightful place, somewhere in the background.
“Figaro! Figaro! Figaro!" – a refrain that has long become a favourite metaphor of millions... Meaning in which everyone finds himself!"
